Lynker is seeking a talented Scientific Programmer to support NOAA.
The Scientific Programmer selected will join a team with the goal of modernizing and improving the Forcings Engine within the Next Generation Water Resources Modeling Framework (NextGen).
This position will assist in improving Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) capabilities, creating new regridding algorithms for atmospheric forcings, developing regional calibration tools across a suite of atmospheric forecast models, optimizing Basic Model Interface (BMI) functions within a coupling framework, and expertise in developing data pipeline algorithms in Python.
Duties of the Scientific Programmer will include the following: Developing Basic Model Interface (BMI) applications.
Developing data pipeline workflows in Python.
Developing Python regridding tools for atmospheric forcing datasets, such as ESMF and ExactExtract.
Calculating validation metrics to show skill levels for different regridding tools within the NextGen Forcings Engine.
Modernizing Python module tools within the NextGen Forcings Engine, such as Python numpy, ESMF, and MPI libraries.
Directly working with manipulating a wide variety of meteorological data products which range from satellites, weather radar, numerical weather prediction (NWP) models, climate models, and various real-time or re-analysis datasets.
Developing regional calibration tools to validate skill of atmospheric models across National Weather Service (NWS) domains of interest.
Optimizations to NCAR bias calibration and downscaling tools for atmospheric models.
Collaborating on a scientific paper that will highlight all developments for the NextGen Forcings Engine and its utility for the NextGen framework.
The Scientific Programmer elected should meet the following Qualifications: Appointment to this position requires an earned doctorate OR an advanced master's degree (with 4+ years working experience) in atmospheric sciences, computer science with applied environmental science, or a closely related field.
The Ideal Scientific Programmer will meet the following Qualifications: Experience in numerical weather prediction, hydrological modeling/forecasting, atmospheric modeling/forecasting, coupled modeling, ensemble forecasting, statistical post-processing, and verification.
Experience in Python regridding tools, such as ESMF or rasterization tools.
Experience in statistical metrics used for calibration and validation of atmospheric model forecasts.
Experience in technical writing for scientific papers.
Expertise in Python coding.
Experience in R, C+, or Fortran as well is a plus.
Experience in developing data pipelines using a blend of atmospheric data products within Python.
Experience in GitHub basics and managing repositories.
Experience in Basic Model Interface (BMI) applications or related coupling frameworks (e.
g.
ESMF) is a plus.
Experience in using High Performance Supercomputers, developing and executing automation scripts, handling large datasets, and familiar with high-performance storage and archiving systems.
